Messing with the blogging world since 2005

I can come pick up what?

August 27, 2015

This one comes from the books of the “You can’t make this stuff up.”

It also comes from the book of “Seriously?”

Look, some things in life need to be dealt with an extreme eye for detail. One of those is dealing with anything regarding death.

Thursday, I received a phone call on my cell phone. What’s really cool with this new FitBit is the phone number comes up on it. At the time, I was meeting with somebody for work, so I peeked at the number and it wasn’t one I knew, so I figured it was some telemarketer and I ignored it. When I was free later, I saw I had a voice mail.

This is what I heard:

“Hello, this is (NAME) from (some cremation service) calling to let you know that the cremated remains of your mother (NAME) are ready for pickup. Pickup days are Tuesday through Friday. The hours are 8:30 to noon, or 2 to 4:30. Thank you and take care. Bye”

I chose to eliminate the names and the name of the cremation service on purpose as I don’t want to put it all out there.

But this seems kind of crazy, doesn’t it?

First, my mother is doing just fine. In fact, the mother they called about – the name isn’t the same.

Second, wouldn’t you make sure you had the right number? This is an extremely sensitive situation, I would think. What if I was one of those people who just deleted things like this? Somebody would still be waiting.

Needless to say, later in the day I called back. To help this person, I needed to give a phone number (and I also gave the name of the lady whose remains were ready) to try and help them figure out what was going on. That leads me to believe it is some sort of thing where they call a lot of people over the course of a day.

Still, there’s a need to make sure you pay attention to detail.

In the end, I hope they eventually called the right person and that person gets the remains of his or her mother.

This leads me to wonder – how many of you have gotten crazy calls or messages like this? What did you do in return? Did you call the person back or just delete it and move on?

    Wow!

Good of you to call and let them know of the mistake.

That is a crazy voice message!

I, for awhile last month, was getting almost daily phone calls from a communications company. They always left a message saying they wanted to talk to me about my bill and if I wanted, I could access my account via their web page.

The problem is I don’t have an account with them nor are they a communications company who work in our area. I found this out when I finally got tired of them calling me and discovered they covered San Diego and Santa Barbara Counties, neither county does my county even touch.

For whatever reason, my phone number got put onto someone’s account. They took it off and I haven’t received a phone call from them since.

Calls like those communication companies are ones I get, too. But I block them (love the iPhone for that) and move on. This one was definitely not a “phishing” scam call, rather something of an error. Crazy how big of an error, too.

Well, that is a creepy mistake phone call! I normally also get those fake spam calls looking to sell me something. I ignore them and they never leave a message.

I wrote this about Sam Nader during a public celebration of his 100th birthday. I'm sure I'll have something more in the next day or so as well, but this covers a lot about my thoughts of this amazing man. RIP, Sam. You'll be missed.
