Mixing up the finds

There’s nothing like a roadtrip to that has geocaching and baseball.

On my day off this past week, two of us opted to take a trip up to Auburn to catch a baseball game. We had never seen the park up there and were in the mood for a game. Plus, the minor league season is quickly coming to an end, so I needed to use that Minor League pass of mine one more time before it expires for the season.

Along the way? Geocaching, of course.

Let me first give the final count — we found 15 and I logged “did not find” posts for four others. Of the finds, we got one letterbox hybrid, three virtuals, a multi (which we didn’t even realize was a multi), and an Earthcache. I’d say we mixed it up pretty well, which is always fun.

Anyway… let’s tackle this day of caching (I already covered the baseball in a previous post).

We started by making our way through Marathon and picking up a couple of quick caches, including the letterbox hybrid. I stamped my personal notebook with the stamp and left my imprint in the log. We went to get one more in Marathon, but it was in a cemetery somewhere. And well, there was a funeral going on that day. So we opted not to even look and skip it.

The next bunch were hit or miss. Found a couple in some side-of-the-road cemeteries before hitting one called “DNF #4 – Keep your boots on.” See, the problem here is that we didn’t make the find on 1/1.5. Alas, this is one of those ones that you can accept the DNF based on a sign there…

So, off we went with a good chuckle. We hit up one that ended up being on something pretty funny:

Note that I talked Rod into peeking over the sign to check things out. I will say this — it was a pretty creative cache. Especially considering people gave us some odd looks when we were there. Ahhh well.

We followed that up with an Earthcache, landed one more cache before hitting Auburn (and another DNF, too). We entered an area park up there, found a micro and wandered out to an awesome virtual where you walk out on a lake — with one long walkway. Very cool and well done. I enjoyed it a lot. A couple of shots from out there:

After doing two virtuals in that park, then one at the entrance, we only did three more the rest of the day. One was across the street in another small park. Nicely done and a place where I swapped travel bugs. We then went to a third virtual — in a cemetery. After getting to the spot, we plugged in some coordinates and made our way to the grave of Harriet Tubman.

To be able to see the final resting place of such a big name in American history was worth going to this cemetery.

Unfortunately, the lighting wasn’t great to get a dramatic or real solid shot of the headstone, but I think this gives you all an idea. It was pretty interesting to see this.

We hit the game and on our way out, realized there was a cache at the ballpark.

Argh!

We went and looked a bit, but in the end needed to log it as a DNF as it was tough to keep looking with people coming and going.

Going through Moravia, we found one last one for the evening, making it 14 finds on the day. Not too shabby. Up to 369 now. I’m hoping to plot out an Earthcache or two soon so I can climb up the ranks of the Earthcache Masters program.

Nothing like a day of caching and baseball on a perfect day. If I could get the winning lottery numbers, I have a feeling this could happen a lot more often!

Hides and finds

Before I ever considered the trip trip to Auburn, I had taken Sunday (holiday off at work) and ventured over to Norwich to grab a couple of caches. I didn’t leave myself much time, so I just ended up with a few finds, but that’s all good. In all, we picked up five — including one lamp post cache in New Berlin that had been dodging me for a couple of months. In fact, I had been at this spot a few times before and couldn’t get it. Seems like there’s always someone in the parking lot or mulling around this gas station. Yes, there were people there Sunday. I finally said heck with it and went for it to make the score.

We did five total that night and didn’t find one or two others. Always annoying, alas still a good day. We were looking for one in a Wal-Mart parking lot (shockingly enough not in a lamp post) and couldn’t figure it out. Never did end up finding it. But some gal who was heading home from her shift questioned us. I don’t mind explaining what I’m doing, but if you are going to sound and act like an uneducated buffoon when I take the time to explain it, don’t ask. Seriously.

Anyway, not sure the next time I’ll get caching. There might be a long break coming up with high school football, work and a bunch of other things coming up. I’m hoping to find a day or two in the coming weeks to be able to go, but we’ll have to see. Only time can tell.

More later!

Hi,

Saw you over at Cosmic Cowgirl’s and was just wondering how a nice New Yorker like you turned out to be a Phillies fan, unless you grew up in that area too…

I’m noticing that this geocaching gets highly addictive in a very short period of time. Are there any side effects to that?

Just curious.

Well that is cool that you got a variety of finds and got to combine two hobbies in one day.
I love your comment about the girl at Walmart questioning you -” I don’t mind explaining what I’m doing, but if you are going to sound and act like an uneducated buffoon when I take the time to explain it, don’t ask. Seriously.” That made me laugh. Sometimes you start to explain it to you and they get all weird or starry eyed. That is why lately if someone asks, I just tell them I am doing a scavenger hunt. It works pretty well.
