Softball is fun again

Yes, we’re 8-0 this season. Winning makes things easier to have fun with. But even when faced with defeat, things have been a blast this season.

I’ve really loved playing softball again. So much so that I am peeved I have to miss three games during my trip to Ireland!

Anyway, Thursday night really showed the love again.

I had to pitch — my first time this year — and I got stakes to a 9-1 lead after one inning. But see, there’s something to be said about a knuckleballer. If it’s not working it can go bad quickly.

Let’s just say that the game wasn’t pretty. I gave up seven homers, including three sets of back-to-back jacks. Ouch! The good thing about back-to-back homers is that there’s a guarantee that there will be no runners on base for the second one.

Eventually, we fell behind. Battled back to take the lead. The other team tied it in the seventh and would have taken the lead if not for our left-fielder hosing someone at third before the run crossed.

So, we had our chance.

Our No. 3 hitter reaches in the bottom of the seventh to lead off. I wanted to bunt, my instinct said to bunt, but I opted to let our No. 4 hit. He got out. The No. 5 popped out foul. Then, the 6-hitter got a single that would have scored our initial runner if he had been on second.

Needless to say, extra innings and off to the eighth.

They scored four runs (yes, more homers) and put us in the hole. Things didn’t look good. But, a couple of walks, two runs in and all of a sudden this looks good. Two on and the No. 4 hitter up again with two outs.

No, I wasn’t thinking bunt.

Neither was he.

A three-run walk-off homer to give us a 21-20 victory. It was modified-pitch softball how it was meant to be. It was a total blast. You could see everyone was into it, too. When the hitter came across, he was mobbed at home plate, there were tons of cheers.

It’s fun again.

We almost didn’t get in the league this year. They raised rates, took away things, teams didn’t get in. But this is fun again. Win or lose, if it’s games like this I’ll have a blast.

Of course it will be better should we win a championship. But that’s a long way away. I just want to keep having fun.

More later!
